SEO for photographers – how to rank your website on Google?

You have a great portfolio, you carefully manage your social media, but still too few people visit your website? Are you wondering why your competitors appear higher in Google results, even though your photos are not worse at all? Or maybe you are just creating your website and don't know how to make clients find you on their own?
If any of these problems sound familiar, you are in the right place. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is one of the most effective tools that will allow you to get clients without having to spend a fortune on ads.
My name is Kasia Grzech and I am a copywriter and SEO specialist. I help photographers promote themselves effectively on Google and attract clients with well-optimized content. If you want to learn more, be sure to check out Mafelo on YouTube, where I talked about SEO for photographers as part of the #RozwójFotografa series.
Because I know how important it is to have specific tips at hand and come back to them while working on your website, I decided to pour my knowledge into this article as well. Thanks to this, you have everything in one place and you can implement effective SEO actions step by step.
And now let's get to the point!
SEO basics – how does the Google search engine work?
SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the process of optimizing a website to help it achieve higher positions in Google search results. For a photographer, this means one thing – a better chance that potential clients will find your offer when they type phrases like wedding photographer Warsaw or newborn photoshoot Krakow into the search engine.
Google acts like a huge library where algorithms constantly analyze and classify billions of websites. For your website to appear high in the results, it must meet certain criteria – contain the right keywords, be well-indexed, and its content should answer the users' needs.
Basic SEO terms you should know
Keywords – phrases that users type into the search engine (e.g. maternity photography Wroclaw).
Indexing – the process in which Google reviews and saves the content of your website in its database.
Ranking – the position of your website in search results (the higher, the better!).
Google algorithms – complex mechanisms that decide which websites are more valuable and deserve a higher position.
Google takes into account many factors, such as content quality, page loading speed, mobile responsiveness, and links pointing to your website. That is why effective SEO is not only about choosing keywords, but also taking care of the technical and substantive quality of the website.
Choosing the right keywords for a photographer
Your potential clients are looking for a photographer on Google, but... are they really typing exactly what you have on your website? This is a crucial question, because if you use the wrong phrases, your site might not appear in search results at all. Therefore, choosing the right keywords is the foundation of effective SEO.
How to find the phrases that potential clients type?
First, put yourself in your client's shoes. What would you type into Google when looking for a photographer for a wedding, a business session, or family photos? Think about the location, the type of services, and additional features that might be important to your potential clients.
Do not limit yourself to general phrases like wedding photographer – think about more precise queries, e.g.:
boho style wedding photography
outdoor business photography Krakow
newborn photoshoot Wroclaw studio
Tools for keyword analysis
You don't have to guess – there are tools that help you check what phrases people actually use. Some are completely free, so you don't need to invest extra budget.
Ubersuggest – an intuitive platform that shows the search volume for specific keywords.
AnswerThePublic – ideal for discovering questions people ask on Google, e.g. how much does a wedding photoshoot cost?
Long tail keywords – why should you use more detailed phrases?
Long tail keywords (longer, more precise phrases) can be the key to effective ranking. An example? Instead of wedding photography, use the phrase wedding photographer Krakow traveling to the client. These types of queries usually have less competition, but they reach exactly the people who are looking for specific services.
Examples of effective keywords for different types of photography
Wedding photography: wedding photographer Gdansk reviews, outdoor wedding photoshoot Tatra mountains price
Business photography: image session Warsaw studio, corporate photographer Krakow
Product photography: packshot photography Poznan, cosmetics advertising photos
Family photography: baptism photographer Lodz, family outdoor photoshoot Wroclaw
Website optimization
Well-chosen keywords are one thing, but without a properly optimized website, it will be hard to achieve a high position on Google. Search engine algorithms evaluate both the content on the page and its technical structure. The website must be readable, fast, and adapted to mobile devices. How to do it?
Page titles and meta descriptions – how to write them to attract attention?
The page title (title tag) is one of the most important SEO elements. It should contain a keyword and encourage the user to click. The optimal length is about 50–60 characters. A meta description is a short text visible in search results – it doesn't directly affect the page ranking, but if well written, it can increase the number of clicks.
Example:
Bad: "Home page"
Good: "Wedding photographer Warsaw – natural and emotional photos"
Header structure (H1, H2, H3) and their importance
Google analyzes the header hierarchy, so it is worth sticking to a logical structure:
H1 – the main header, the most important one, it should contain a keyword.
H2, H3 – subtitles that help organize the content and make navigation easier for readers.
Content optimization – how to write service descriptions and blog posts for SEO?
Every subpage should contain a unique, valuable description that meets the user's needs and includes key phrases naturally. Blog posts are a great way to rank – publishing content regularly increases your chances of getting new clients.
Internal linking – how does it help in navigation and website ranking?
Adding links between pages helps users navigate your site more easily and makes Google index your website better. Link to related services, blog posts, and key subpages.
Page loading speed – how to improve it?
A slow-loading page discourages users and lowers your position on Google. Key actions:
Compress photos (e.g. using TinyPNG)
Use caching
Limit unnecessary scripts and plugins
Mobile version of the website – why is it crucial?
Google uses so-called "mobile-first indexing", which means it evaluates the website primarily based on its mobile version. If your website is not responsive, its position in search results might be lower.
SSL certificate – does it affect SEO?
User safety is a priority for Google. Websites without an SSL certificate (meaning without the "https" prefix) can be marked as unsafe, which affects user trust and visibility in the search engine.
Image optimization for SEO
Photos are the heart of a photographer's website, but if they are not optimized properly, they can slow down the page and miss their potential on Google. How to make sure that your photographs not only look great but also support your website's visibility?
How to name image files so they are well indexed?
Google does not "see" photos the way humans do – instead, it analyzes their names and descriptions. Instead of leaving default file names like "IMG_3456.jpg", it is worth describing the photo in a way that is understandable for both the search engine and the user.
Example:
Bad: IMG_1234.jpg
Good: wedding-photographer-warsaw-natural-photos.jpg
It's best to use short, descriptive names, separating words with hyphens, because Google doesn't recognize spaces and underscores.
The importance of ALT attributes and image descriptions
The ALT attribute (alternative text) is text that describes the content of a photo. It is crucial for SEO and improves accessibility for people using screen readers. Google uses it to understand what is in the picture.
How to write ALT text?
Describe the photo specifically and naturally
Use keywords, but don't overdo it
Avoid phrases like "the photo shows..." – go straight to the description
Example:
Bad: "photo of a Bride and Groom"
Good: "Bride and Groom at an outdoor wedding photoshoot, romantic photography at sunset"
Image compression – how to reduce their size without losing quality?
Image files that are too large slow down the website, which negatively affects user experience and SEO. Therefore, it is worth compressing photos before adding them to your site.
Tools for compressing photos:
TinyPNG – effectively reduces the size of PNG and JPEG
Squoosh – allows you to adjust the compression level
ShortPixel – a WordPress plugin that optimizes photos automatically
Photo format – JPEG, PNG, or WebP?
Choosing the right photo format affects their quality and file size.
JPEG – best for photography, because it compresses files well while maintaining quality
PNG – suitable for graphics with a transparent background, but takes up more space
WebP – a modern Google format, combining the quality of JPEG and PNG with a smaller size (my favorite)
Frame
Careful image optimization makes your website load faster, rank better on Google, and provide a better user experience.
A blog as a key element of your SEO strategy
A blog is one of the most powerful tools you can use to rank your website. Regularly published content makes Google see your site as active and valuable, which translates into better visibility in search results. Thanks to a blog, you can naturally weave in keywords that you want to rank for, and reach clients exactly when they are looking for information about photoshoots, preparing for them, or choosing a photographer.
Running a blog also helps you build authority and trust. When potential clients visit your website and find articles that answer their questions, they automatically start seeing you as an expert in your field. You can share behind-the-scenes of your work, tips for photoshoots, or inspirations that will attract people genuinely interested in your services.
It is worth making sure that each post has a clear structure – a readable title, division into sections with headers, and visually attractive elements, such as photos or lists. Blog optimization for SEO also includes internal linking – it is good to direct the reader to other posts or subpages with your offer, so they stay on the site longer. The more refined and valuable your articles are, the greater the chance they will reach high positions on Google, attracting new clients to you.
Social media and SEO – do social media profiles affect ranking?
Although Google does not treat social media activity as a direct ranking factor, their impact on SEO is undeniable. Presence on social media helps build your brand, increase website traffic, and generate natural links to your site, which positively affects ranking.
For photographers, visual platforms like Instagram and Pinterest are especially valuable, where you can showcase your portfolio and attract potential clients. Facebook, on the other hand, works great as a place to build a community and engage your audience through stories, thematic groups, or events.
For social media to effectively support SEO, it is worth regularly sharing links to your website – whether in posts, in the "bio" section on Instagram, or in photo descriptions on Pinterest. The more people visit your site, the stronger the signal to Google that your content is valuable.
Monitoring and analyzing SEO results
SEO is a long-term process that requires regular analysis and optimization. If you want to check if your actions are bringing results, you will need tools for monitoring results, such as Google Analytics and Google Search Console.
Google Analytics allows you to track website traffic, check where users come from, and which content is the most popular. Thanks to this, you will find out which keywords and strategies work best. In turn, Google Search Console will show you for which phrases your site appears on Google, which subpages need optimization, and whether there are technical errors on the site that may affect your position in search results.
When analyzing the data, pay attention to which blog posts generate the most traffic, how long users stay on your site, and what actions they take. Based on this, you can improve your SEO strategy, optimize existing content, and plan further actions that will increase your visibility on the web.
Summary and a dose of motivation to act
SEO for photographers is not a one-time action, but a process that requires regularity and consistency. However, the results can be truly satisfying – once you optimize your website well and take care of valuable content, over time you will start attracting clients organically, without having to spend your budget on ads.
Where to start? If you haven't done SEO before, take a few first steps.
Optimize your website for local keywords,
Make sure your website runs fast and looks good on mobile devices,
Add ALT descriptions to photos and optimize their names,
Create the first blog posts answering your clients' questions,
Regularly analyze website traffic and draw conclusions based on data from Google Analytics and Search Console.
Remember that SEO is a long-term strategy – the earlier you start, the sooner you will see results. It is important to treat it as part of your daily work, not a one-time project. It is also worth following changes in Google algorithms and constantly improving your actions.
